Does your brick need tuckpointing?Craftsman Waco will tell you straight

A cobblestone paver driveway leads to a brick house with two gray garage doors, bordered by lawns and garden beds.

If the mortar between your bricks crumbles when you rub it, has sunk back from the brick face or shows thin cracks, it's worth a look before it spreads. Craftsman Waco Concrete and Masonry does tuckpointing in Waco and the cities around it, and I look at every wall myself before anyone cuts a joint.

We rake out only the joints that are failing and leave the good ones alone, because sound original mortar beats anything we'd put back. Before we go wide, we mix a small batch and set it in a spot nobody looks at, so you can see the color next to your old joints.

Price moves with how many joints have failed and how hard the wall is to reach. The schedule turns on any permit for your address and on fixing a leaking downspout first, since one can wash mortar right out of a wall. My written estimate spells out which walls and joints we'd do.

You'll get a straight answer on whether your wall needs it, and a clean site when we're done. Call (254) 327-1950.

Tuckpointing for the brick you have

We look at the brick, the joint shape and where the water comes from before we pick a mortar, so the repair suits the wall it's going into.

  • House walls

Most calls are for the walls of the house itself, where we cut out the failing joints, pack in new mortar and tool it to the shape your old joints have.

  • Chimneys

Chimney joints take water from every side and sit hardest to reach, so we set up safe access first and check the rest of the chimney while we're up there.

  • Cracked bricks and joints

When bricks have cracked along with the joints, pointing alone won't hold, so we swap out the broken ones through our brick repair work and point around them.

I'd rather tell you a wall is fine than sell you work it doesn't need. That call is part of every estimate I write.

We're licensed and fully insured, so you're not carrying the risk while our crew works on your walls, ladders and scaffolding.

  1. Call or send a message

Call (254) 327-1950 or fill out the form, and tell us which walls are bothering you. Photos of the worst joints help me plan the visit.

  2. I look at the wall

I come out, check the joints, the bricks and the downspouts with you, ask what you want and put the work and the price in writing.

  3. Materials and permit

Once you say go, we order materials, check with the city for your address and pull any permit it needs. Work starts after the permit shows as Issued.

  4. Test batch, then repoint

We set the test batch first for your okay, then rake out the failing joints, pack in new mortar and tool it to match the old ones.

  5. Clean up and walk it

We clean the brick faces and the ground around the house, then walk the wall with you so you see every joint we did before we call it finished.

Tuckpointing questions

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

Usually, yes. Both words mean cutting bad mortar out of the joints in a brick wall and filling them with new. Tuckpointing also names an older look, a flush joint close to the brick color finished with a thin strip of contrasting mortar, so ask which one a contractor means.

How do I know my brick house needs tuckpointing?

Your mortar needs work when it has worn back more than ¼ inch from the brick face, crumbles, shows hairline cracks or gaps, or when bricks have cracked along with the joints. Mortar lasts roughly 25 to 50 years and brick 100 years or more, so most brick houses need it at some point. I'll look first and tell you if yours doesn't.

How much does tuckpointing cost in Waco?

The biggest thing in the price is how many joints have failed, because repointing is slow hand work done one joint at a time. A tall wall or a chimney that needs scaffolding adds to it, and so does any drainage fix that has to come first. I'll give you a written price after I've seen the wall.

What is the best mortar for repointing old brick?

The best mortar is one weaker than your brick, because a stronger mix makes the brick faces spall, flaking and breaking off. Ask any contractor how their planned mortar compares with your brick before work starts. I'll tell you what we plan to use and why.

Will new mortar match my old joints?

It can come close once the sand and cement are right, because the color of new mortar comes from the sand color and the type of cement. That's what our test batch out of sight is for, so you judge it next to your old joints before we go further.

Who issues residential permits for brick work in Waco?

The city's Inspection Services issues permits for residential construction and remodeling, and the city requires one before a property is altered or renovated. We check with that office whether your repointing needs one, and when it does, we pull it and line up the inspections. If your home is a landmark or in a historic district, ask the city's historic preservation office whether its landmark commission has to approve the work first.
